Calculation Principles & Health Significance
Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR) is a unitless ratio calculated by dividing waist circumference by height. Studies suggest that WHtR is a better predictor of central obesity and associated risks (cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension) than BMI.
Formula: WHtR = Waist Circumference / Height (must use same units)
General Rule: Keep your waist circumference to less than half your height (WHtR < 0.5).
WHtR Health Reference Ranges
| Category | Male Range | Female Range | Health Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slim / Underweight | < 0.43 | < 0.42 | Low |
| Healthy | 0.43 - 0.52 | 0.42 - 0.48 | Low |
| Overweight | 0.53 - 0.62 | 0.49 - 0.57 | Increased |
| Obese | ≥ 0.63 | ≥ 0.58 | High |
