Methodology & CDC Standards
Child BMI needs to be interpreted relative to other children of the same age and sex. This calculator uses the CDC Growth Charts for children and teens aged 2-19 years to determine the BMI percentile.
BMI Formula: Weight(kg) / Height(m)²
Percentile: Calculated using the CDC LMS method (Lambda-Mu-Sigma parameters), which converts the raw BMI into a Z-score based on age and sex specific distribution data.
*Note: The percentile indicates the relative position of the child's BMI among children of the same sex and age.*
CDC Weight Status Categories
| Percentile Range | Weight Status | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Less than 5th | Underweight | BMI < 5th percentile |
| 5th to 85th | Healthy Weight | 5th ≤ BMI < 85th percentile |
| 85th to 95th | Overweight | 85th ≤ BMI < 95th percentile |
| 95th and higher | Obese | BMI ≥ 95th percentile |
