How to Use
Tips & Notes
Scope of Use Primarily used for clinical drug dosing (e.g., aminoglycosides) and nutritional planning, especially for obese patients.
Interpreting Results If your actual weight exceeds 120% of IBW, "Adjusted Body Weight" is recommended as the baseline in relevant medical contexts.
Disclaimer Results are for reference only and should not be used as the sole basis for medical diagnosis or treatment. Always consult a professional.
Calculation Principles & Formulas
In clinical nutrition and drug dosing, using actual body weight for obese patients (>120% IBW) may lead to overdosing, while using ideal body weight may result in underdosing. Adjusted Body Weight (AjBW) is a compromise that accounts for the lower metabolic activity of adipose tissue.
Ideal Body Weight (IBW) - Devine Formula:
Male: 50 kg + 2.3 kg × (Height(in) - 60)
Female: 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg × (Height(in) - 60)
Adjusted Body Weight (AjBW) Formula:
Where 0.4 (40%) represents the proportion of metabolically active mass in adipose tissue.
Which Weight to Use?
| Body Condition | Clinical Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Underweight (< 100% IBW) | Use Actual Body Weight (ABW) |
| Normal Range (100% - 120% IBW) | Usually Actual Body Weight (ABW) |
| Obese (> 120% IBW) | Use Adjusted Body Weight (AjBW) |
